THE DUCKY DERBY RULES
BODY: The wood block included in the pinewood derby car kit must be used. Bodies built from other materials are not allowed. The body may be shaped, hollowed out, or built up from the original block. Any additions to the original body (such as steering wheels, drivers, decals, paint, weights, etc.) must be firmly attached.
WIDTH: The car width at the wheels may not be modified. The overall width shall not exceed 2 3/4″. The minimum width between wheels shall be 1 3/4” inches. The minimum clearance between the bottom of the car and the surface shall be 3/8” (to ensure the car will clear the center guide strip on the track).
LENGTH: The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7″.
HEIGHT: The car’s height shall not exceed 3″ (to ensure the car will fit under the electronic timer at the finish line).
WHEELS: The wheels and axles must be those included in the pinewood derby car kit. No washers, bushings, or springs are allowed. Dry powdered graphite is the only lubricant that can be applied. No liquid lubricants may be used.
WEIGHT: The weight of the race-ready car shall not exceed 5 ounces as measured on official scales used for registration and weigh-in on the date of the race. Once the car has been officially weighed in no changes of any sort may be made. Cars should weigh as close to 5 ounces as possible (without being over) to be competitive in the race. Weights made of lead, tungsten, and other materials may be attached to achieve the desired weight.
Purchase kits at Bernard’s Ace Hardware and the Lowell Area Chamber of Commerce. Kits range from $6 to $20.
